The United World Colleges (UWCs) –Philippines is searching for senior high school student interested in pursuing a two-year international baccalaureate course abroad. Applicants must be Filipino high school students graduating at the top 10 percent of their graduating class before August 2009. Selected candidates will be eligible for a full or partial scholarship to UWCs in Wales (U.K.), Italy, Hong Kong, or Costa Rica.

The UWC, co-chaired by Nelson Mandela and Queen Noor, is the only global education movement that brings together students aged 16 to 19 from all over the world at pre-university level. Students are selected based on merit regardless of race, sex, or creed and live together in an environment designed to foster international understanding, peace and justice.

The two-year International Baccalaureate program serves as the educational framework but of equal importance, community service programs allow the teenagers to work together. The selection process looks for candidates with an open mind and the personal qualities that will enable them to live and study for two years in an intensive multicultural environment. UWC-Philippines is chaired by Cesar Virata and the selection committee includes other UWC alumni and parents.

In the past, Filipino scholars have been sent to UWCs in Canada, Costa Rica, Hong Kong, Italy, USA, Wales and Venezuela. There are currently seven Filipino scholars in UWCs.

Visit www.ph.uwc.org to learn more about the
program and the scholarships
, and download application forms. They may also contact Gillian Virata at info@ph.uwc.org or fax 635-0294 to request forms by e-mail of fax and for more information. The deadline for submission of application forms is March 6, 5 p.m.

Practical nurses is now greatly in demand abroad. To meet the growing demand for skilled and competent healthcare workers abroad, many schools are now offering two-year Practical Nursing program especially the AMA Education System with its St. Augustine School of Nursing branches.

The course, a 2-year program will train students to care for sick, injured, convalescent, and disabled patients under the direction of a physician or licensed nurse.

Practical Nursing is an emerging career abroad known as Vocational Nursing which the AMA Education System has pioneered in the Philippines as Practical Nursing. This course aims to bridge the gap between vocational-training and a college degree. The graduated in this course may be employed in hospitals, long-term care facilities, or home care agencies.

Through St. Augustine School of Nursing (SASN), AMA trains future nurses to pass the standards required by big local hospitals and advanced facilities abroad and at the same time, inspiring students to care for the less fortunate through medical and outreach programs.

Growing demand for vocational or practical nurses abroad especially in industrialized nations like the United States, Canada, UK, Australia and the Arab nations, necessitated the regulation of its practice. And to professionalize the Filipino health workers, the U.S. National Council of State Board Nursing (NCSBN) has authorized the Pearson Vue Professional Center in Makati City to facilitate the NCLEX Registered Nurses and Practical Nurses examination.

NCSBN is the umbrella organization that provides leadership and advance regulatory excellence in public protection for both registered nurses and licensed practical nursing professionals.

The course is a ladderized program, for Practical Nursing graduates may continue their education to become a registered nurse by pursuing the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree program in St. Augustine College of Nursing. Or they may opt to go to Canada, UK and the Middle East and continue with the BSN program while working and earning part time at the same time.
