How to Avoid Unnecessary Bank Fees

May 26th, 2010 by Eleazar | No Comments | Filed in Financial Literacy

It is important to be aware of the different maintenance and transaction fees that banks charge their depositors. Nobody likes to pay for extra fees and charges. After all, hard-earned money is hard-earned money. However, lack of information could lead to penalties and debt, especially when it comes to bank fees and charges.
Some of the fees include service fees for deposits falling below the minimum Average Daily Balance (ADB), dormancy fees, service charges for excess withdrawals, service fees for closing the account within one month from its opening, ATM transaction fees, and overdraft charges.
Financial Consumer Affairs Group (FCAG) of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas release a primer containing some important reminders to the public that will help avoid unnecessary bank fees. Here it is read on…
1. Be watchful of your balance. Be aware of the required minimum maintaining balance for your account and keep your deposit balance within such maintaining balance. Bank fees and charges for falling below the ADB are computed at the end of each month.
2. Make sure that you update your deposit account regularly. Under BSP regulations, deposit accounts that are left “sleeping” with no transactions (deposits or withdrawals) for a period of two years will be subjected to dormancy fees.
To keep your account active and avoid dormancy fees, make it a habit to regularly make even small deposits. If this is not possible, just close the deposit account before the two-year period expires regardless of how much your deposit balance is.
3. Third, track your transactions. The FCAG said that for free ATM transactions, it is best to choose your own bank’s ATM. If this is not possible, you should choose the ATM network with the lowest ATM transaction fees. The BSP’s website www.bsp.gov.ph/banking/servicefee.pdf shows these transaction fees.

4. Always update your checkbook account balance. If you maintain a checking account, balance your account at least once a month and do not “bounce” checks (typical fees for checks written against insufficient funds: P1,000 to P2,000).

5. Make sure that you pay your credit card bills on time to avoid late payment fees. If you cannot pay your amount due in full, pay as much as you can.
The FCAG said that while banks play an essential role in boosting the economy, they do have their profit objectives.

Though the BSP does not put a ceiling on the amount of fees or charges that banks may collect from their depositors and credit card clients, the banks have the responsibility to keep their clients aware of finance charges to help them make informed decisions regarding their banking transactions.
