Smart Communications Inc., had launched a pioneering Internet phone service aptly called Plug N Talk, targeting some 10 million Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs).

Plug N Talk is the country’ first USB (Universal Serial Bus) communication device that allows parties outside the Philippines to call and text fro Internet-connected Personal Computers (PCs) to any local mobile and landline number using their Smart Subscriber Identity Module (SIM).

Already, Smart has close to 1 million roaming services subscriber that Plug N Talk can support, of its 34.2 million existing subscribers as of end September this year. This Internet phone service will be offered in the US and Japan, followed by the United Kingdom, Middle East and Australia.

Plug N Talk has taken communications beyond the phone-to-phone scenario and enabled Internet-connected computer to transmit voice and text to a mobile phone and vice versa. The set up allows subscriber to access the Smart network via the Internet wherever he is in the world and enjoy call rates for P6.50 per minutes and text messages for P1 per send. Loading Plug N Talk is easy, subscriber can use his Smart load or buy load online at www.smartpinoy.net.ph.

Plug N Talk, an easy to use, affordable, portable and SIM-secured USB device is sold in Smart wireless centers nationwide for just P1,800.00 per kit.

Globe Telecom, the leading telecommunication company in the Philippines, had launched a new SMS campaign called FreeTxt. This service will allow all Globe prepaid subscribers without credits, and Touch mobile subscribers with only Ph1.00 load to send free text messages to other Globe and TM subscribers. FreeTxt is mainly created as “the emergency texting solution”, which makes it ideal to use during urgent situations.

It is best when a Globe prepaid subscribers ran out of load and needs to send an immediate reply to a very important text message. TM patrons may also enjoy the benefits of free texting; however, they are required to have a Ph1.00 maintaining balance.

Since it is perfect during vital circumstances, FreeTxt is jus right for people who are always on the go. These people comprising of drivers, messengers, sales executives, helpers, and nannies should not worry about prepaid credits since they can immediately send SMS to their sirs and madams whenever needed, free of any SMS charge.

Low-cost retail broadband is one of the options for Filipinos to try to get internet connection. With the signing of a deal between technology company We are IT Philippines, Inc. (WIT) and Thaicom Public Company, satellite broadband services can now be offered in the country.

The broadband services will be powered by IPSTAR satellite, currently one of the largest satellites in Asia, which is owned and operated by Thaicom.

Called the “IPSTAR BigSky,” the satellite broadband services will be targeted for the country’s rural areas. WIT will be targeting some 50,000 subscribers in these areas in the next 2 to 3 years. Since piloting this service in Mindanao, they have attracted significant subscribers.

Satellite broadband is fit for rural areas that are under-served when it comes to broadband Internet access. And WIT will also serve as the satellite gateway provider.

Subscribers in the Philippines can avail of the entry level service for $49 for a 512/256 Kbps downlink and uplink service, exclusive of an additional entry fee, consisting of a deposit fee for the satellite dish and other equipment. The price approximated DSL services rates.

Subscribers who may need faster access can pay an additional fee to jack up the downlink/uplink speed to as much as 2Mbps/1Mbps. The satellite service covers the whole country.

WIT will soon conduct a massive information drive for satellite services, noting that this is needed particularly for areas where Internet access is not common.

Most of us Filipinos today are now ignoring to accept smaller denomination coins such as 1 cent, 5 cents and 10 cents, or using it to pay products and services.

How many times you saw jeepney drivers refused to accept fare in coins with 10 cents? How many times you went to a store and store owners refused to accept your holed coins because they are reportedly not accepted by bigger businesses such as gas stations and supermarkets? And how many times you saw people laughed when they received 1 cent, 5 cents and 10 cents? These are only few scenarios that the smaller denomination coins were ignored and perceived as a kind of joke.

It seems that these coins have no value. But according to BSP, it is farthest from the truth. How come these little coins have no value when the BSP spends 6 cents for every 1 cent minted at the Bank’s Security Plant Complex? That’s 500% percent more than its face value!

We have to realize, that these coins have far more value than its face value. And it’s right that they still be used in financial transactions. If the 5-centavo coin is not around, businessmen would round off prices to the next higher value. For example, a commodity which should only cost P1.95 would then be charged at P2.00

One centavo, 5 centavos and 10 centavos maybe a smaller denomination coins but these humble coins play an important role in the Philippine economy by keeping prices down.
